I recently stayed a couple of nights at the Hotel Eucalyptus in Porto Pollo on the Golfe de Valinco. I was in Corsica visiting our hotels, villas and apartments and sadly didn’t have much time to explore Porto Pollo itself but I did make time to check out a couple of restaurants there. The second one in particular turned out to be rather special.
Porto Pollo
Porto Pollo is a laid back village by the sea with a small beach and a few restaurants. It’s within easy reach of many more glorious beaches and is close to the archaeological site of Filitosa and its famous stone menhirs.
Hotel Eucalyptus
This lovely hotel, although not right on the seafront, is just a very short stroll from the nearest beach and there’s a lovely sea view from the breakfast terrace, as well as from the rooms. I found the staff particularly helpful and there’s free WiFi on the terrace so I could tweet and blog to my heart’s content, while enjoying the view. So I was a happy! You can read more about Hotel Eucalyptus here.
Auberge Le Rond Point
As always, I was eager to check out the local restaurant scene. Having tried out one of the restaurants on the seafront, and been a little disappointed, we decided to try Le Rond Point. It’s about a ten minute drive out of town but I had read that it served excellent traditional cuisine.
Just off the main road to Porto Pollo, the view would have been prettier at a restaurant on the sea front, I much preferred the atmosphere of Le Rond Point. We were quite early and the first ones for dinner but by the time we left the restaurant was pretty much full.
There isn’t a wide choice on the menu which, rather than being printed, is written on a board that the waiter brings over. This suggests to me that the menu changes regularly and may well depend on what fresh ingredients are available each morning. I opted for a starter of cannelloni stuffed with Corsica’s most famous cheese, brocciu, skipped the main course (which was just as well as the pasta was plenty) and then went straight to the pudding.
My colleague had the wild boar casserole (below) and I’m pleased to say he let me have a little taster. It was delicious and tender, just how it should be.
It was the desserts, however, that really excelled, both being an absolute delight. I would have happily gone back the following evening to try some of the other choices on the menu but sadly we had to move on. Next stop Sartene.
You’ll find Auberge Le Rond Point, just beyond the junction between the D757 and the D157, on the left-hand side, as you drive towards Porto Pollo. There’s plenty of parking space and I’d highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
