The old town of Bonifacio is built on a thin promontory of land, overlooking the harbour. At the far end you’ll find the Marine Cemetery (Cimetiere Marin), one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the Mediterranean, looking out across the sea and facing west towards the setting sun.
It is a very peaceful place to quietly wander around, a poignant reminder of our immortality. Yet, as I walked along the narrow paths, just last week, I felt a sense of peace and calm rather than sadness and here are a few of my photographs from that day.
Missed by many visitors to the citadel, the cemetery is well worth seeking out and the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist-filled streets of the old town.
